MEET THE DESIGNER | LISA HSIEH

For the creative mind inspiration may materialize from anywhere. Inspiration can strike at any time or place prompted by objects, individuals, moments in time, sights or smells. For Lisa Hsieh, Founder and Designer of Mien Studios, inspiration is juxtaposed by intuition. “As a designer it is important to always remain aware of your surroundings and to embrace the beauty that lies within the details”, states Hsieh.

INSPIRATION

From the shape of a flower on her favorite tree to the hue of the setting sky on a night to remember, it’s the small details that matter for Hsieh and this approach emanates throughout her entire design philosophy. When asked about her collection Lisa explains that every piece created for the Mien brand is rooted in functionality. Function and form can be beautiful if executed properly and this rule of design rings true in every piece of Hsieh’s modern capsule collection.

PROCESS

The challenge she shares is translating the beauty and avant garde personality of pieces straight off the runways of Paris fashion week into a comfortable, functional yet chic piece busy women want to pull from their closet day in and day out. Why is she so passionate about capturing the essence of a haute couture piece of clothing and simplifying it to create an elevated basic for her customer? “Clothing should fit into your everyday life seamlessly whether your life’s focus is motherhood, career, or both,” she explains.

COLOR

While staying on top of trend is not her priority, Lisa strives to transcend seasonal trends through the fabrication of timeless pieces. Deeply influenced by her background in fine art, Lisa merges color, function and detail in every piece she creates similar to how an artist blends brush strokes on a canvas. Playing with hues and building a color palette is arguably Hsieh’s favorite part of the design process. From drawing and painting as a young girl to projects as an art major at University, color has always played a large part in her creative process.

A COLOR JOURNEY

On the subject of color Lisa shared, “Prior to launching my own collection my personal style mainly comprised of neutrals. As someone who enjoys the minimal beauty of neutral hues it is important for me to always keep in mind how a color will pair with neutral layers and I’ve found this mindset helps me when building a color palette for the season.”

“Seeing a woman walking down the street in one of my pieces brings me so much joy and that feeling, that emotional response, is why I design.”
