Where I Started
& Where We Are Going

Hi, I’m Lisa, the owner and designer of Mien.

Chasing after a dream isn’t easy. Doing what we love requires sacrifice and hard work. But in return, having my own business to design and produce clothing in a way that I’ve always envisioned is a wonderful thing - the feeling of accomplishment that comes when you’re not only allowed, but feel encouraged to let your creativity flow, that freedom is priceless. Starting Mien Studios was the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life and I did it while pregnant with my first child in 2015, trusting that my instinct to start this business and to do it at that moment in my life was right.

Being a working mom is challenging, and being a female entrepreneur growing a sustainable and ethical clothing brand is even more of an uphill battle. But I’m proud for Mien to be a small business taking on the big challenge of manufacturing responsibly and locally. Luckily, we are surrounded by great friends and customers who have the same belief that together we can make a difference. The change starts with shopping small with local makers like myself. Shopping small and more importantly, shopping consciously, means you care about more than most - that you and I are thoughtful about our planet, our local community, and our local economy which in turn supports us all.

As a mama soon two little ones, I also design with mothers like myself in mind. Clothing shouldn't be made to be worn for only a short period of time then discarded. It shouldn't be made of shoddy fabrics that may look decent for a little while but is uncomfortable against our skin all the time - yet that's what I found maternity clothing to be on the market before I started this company. With Mien, our signature organic cotton fabric is beautifully soft and thick, custom knitted for us here in Los Angeles by a fabric mill that's been in business for over 30 years, then it's cut and sewn by a team of wonderful ladies and sent to a dye house to be dyed in toxic-free colors that I've created for Mien. It's labor-intensive and time-consuming, yes, we all deserve this quality of clothing for ourselves and our families, and especially for the health of our planet. With wonderful fabric and craftsmanship at the ready, I design this line keeping a mama or mama-to-be's life in mind, so she can wear her Mien garment before, during, and after pregnancy.
