Hi, I’m Lisa, the owner and designer of Mien.
Mien is French for “Mine”, le mien, meaning "mine". I chose it because the word is simple and visually beautiful. It represents the mother and child relationship that inspires me, because we’re cut from the same cloth. I created this collection to reflect the world that I want to see. It’s all about community - friends, families, partners in life and business, women and children. We take care of each other and our environment.

"I want to create a line for women like us who are approaching motherhood with a desire to keep our identity and our creative life."

I graduated with a fine art degree from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and started my career designing in the apparel industry soon after. I've designed for a premium denim label, an evening/couture atelier, and a number of other indie brands in Los Angeles. My past design experiences prepared me to create a line that was so needed for women like us who are approaching motherhood with a desire to keep our identity and our creative life. We need clothes that not only make sense for this new chapter in life, but also made with our environment and future generations in mind. When I launched Mien in 2015, I was pregnant with my son, Grey. Running around Los Angeles taking my designs from sample to production with a big, pregnant belly was an experience I'll never forget. In a way, he was there with me from the very beginning. Now, motherhood is my biggest source of inspiration.

"Every style Mien offers will be comfortable and flattering for our amazing, ever-changing bodies. Your clothes should work hard for you."

This line will always offer clothes with wonderful quality and craftsmanship. Every style will be comfortable and flattering for our amazing, ever-changing bodies from pre-pregnancy, to pregnancy, to post-partum and nursing. Your clothes should work hard for you, it needs to not only look good, but also be sensible, comfortable, effortless, and keep up with our busy routines. It should be easy to care for as well, so Mien's entire line is machine washable and dryable, nothing needs to be dry-cleaned and every item arrives at your doorstep pre-shrunk.

How I produce my clothing line matters to me. I work with small factories locally in Los Angeles near my Long Beach studio which means I can be there every step of the way. I work with a local fabric mill that custom knits my signature fabric with GOTS certified organic cotton. Every piece is cut and sewn by workers who are paid fairly and work in a clean and safe environment. I also partner with a local dye house that dyes the collection in custom colors I've created using a process that requires less water and no toxic binding agents. In addition to creating and overseeing the entire design and production process from start to finish, I also handle the website design, graphic design, social media, marketing, some photography, and pretty much everything else in between. When you place an order, I am the one that packs, ships and answers any questions.

I appreciate every order that comes through, whether it's here on Mien's website or in person at one of our popups. I'd love for you to keep in touch and follow my journey on Mien's Instagram @mienstudios. I'm a mother too and I take inspiration from motherhood to design and make clothes for our generation of modern women. We can do this. I'm thrilled to have you along for the ride.

Thank you.
Lisa Hsieh
